While reading Metaethical Issues I agreed particularly with
one of the authors claims about the fallacies in religion. On page nine he
discusses how one can never really prove that God has spoken to them when he
says, “ How do you know God
has revealed these truths to you?” (9) I have often considered this when
considering nuns and priests life, they pray every day, waiting for God to
speak to them. This raises many questions I have in religion in general. Why do
we keep pursing Gods words of wisdom if we have never heard them before? I
think it is because there are so many stories about others hearing the words of
God, but shouldn’t we not believe something until we see it with our own hears
or hear it with our own ears? That is
what we are raised to believe except when it comes to the word of God. If we
are to take this a step further, how do we know the bible is the actual word of
God, and not just some book of stories created to scare us. By raising the
question about God speaking to us the author also brings forth many other
essential questions that humans have been pondering forever. I suppose some
humans just need something higher then themselves to believe in, the faith that
something will bring them salvation one day, in which case Religion and
believing in Gods words does have merit.
