Laws Reflect Morals

While reading through this piece many of the statements that were made I found very interesting and did agree with many of the author’s ideas about ethic. Yet, there were a few points that were made that I did not agree with. After reading the part about Why Simply obeying the law is not sufficient there were a few things that I would have to disagree with the authors are saying that “A concern with ethics is much more than staying out of trouble with the law. It is a concern with living well. Simply obeying the law is not enough” (MI 8). As I read further this argument about the piece began to emerge. It seems that the author is saying the simply not breaking the law is not enough and that you have to have a good moral code in order to be an ethical person. My issue with this is that the laws are a reflection of the moral code of a society. They were written as guide lines as to how the citizens of a certain society should be conducting their lives, therefore from my point of view giving them moral and ethical significance. Also looking at the laws from different groups around the world it does give insight into the moral codes of those societies. Looking back and even in modern society’s today there are laws regarding how we should treat one and other and laws about religion. I think that by following the laws that are given to you in a certain society that is enough, and by doing this you are living well. The laws are there as ethical and moral structures for how one should conduct their lives within a society.
