After reading the document “To Torture or Not to Torture” it
made me think and question what can really be considered to be “good” and “bad”
torture. In our society today in the United States I think that Barrack Obama
and the United States Government have tried to persuade people to think that
torture can only be looked as being a bad thing. In my own opinion I think that
torture can and should be justified for the reason of protecting our country
from harm of terrorist our other nations. One of the main arguments that I
support in the reading is the one clearly made about the discovery of Osama Bin
Laden. If it were not for torture of “Ammar” than it is quite possible that
Osama Bin Laden could still be at large today. By the right torture and needed
assistance the proper intelligence was finally uncovered about the location. I would
argue that it is justifiable to torture one person in order to save the lives
of millions of people someplace else. I will also raise the point that although
torture is said to be “illegal” and the United States does not torture we as
citizens rarely even know what truly goes on inside of the CIA due to how secretive
it is. In the event of this happening I think it should be up the military commanders
of what should happen and let them have the final say. On the other hand if the
torture is voted down then the risk of our country being defeated and millions
of lives at risk is surely at jeopardy.
