Torture objection

My main objection is concerning the secrecy of torture. Many places, like the United States, have employed torture as a means of getting information from terrorists and others that pose threats to national security. While it makes sense that the government would want to keep these cases under wraps, it does not allow for checks and balances that are so important in a democracy. Right now torture is completely illegal in the United States,” In fact, the US and international laws are clear on this point, leaving no ambiguity with respect to the illegality of torture under "any circumstances"” (Arar). Despite this, there is torturing being preformed by U.S. government officials to this day, they are completely unregulated and completely secret. If the government is going to continue using torture then they must acknowledge it in the laws so that those being tortured are in some way protected.
