Voluntourism

I do agree with the article's perspective that most of the voluntourism done today isn't very beneficial to the local area and with the case of orphans, it can actually be harmful. However, I do think that if the aim of voluntourism was shifted from the volunteers just gaining life experience to the poor and impoverished it could do a lot of good. The articles mentioned that just hanging out with orphans or building homes doesn't really help the situation for any of the people since it doesn't give them any actual skills or help elevate them out of their current situation. Even small changes could be done to make it more beneficial to the local population, such as farming and giving out food instead of just hanging out with orphans and building houses. Another good alternative, though it might limit the number of people that could apply, would be to teach courses in agriculture or a marketable skill that would help them gain employment. So overall while i do agree with the complaints that voluntourism doesn't currently do that much good, it could be changed to actually help out the impoverished people.
