Comfort Women
It is hard for me to take a hard stance on the comfort women we read about because there are just as many accounts basically saying nothing happened as there are detailed accounts of the kidnappings, etc. There was clearly some violation to these girls as the Japanese men who partook in these events feel high levels of guilt and remorse however most will not confess to their crimes. This makes it much harder to know exactly how all the events surrounding this topic played out. The moral implications of taking women out of their hometowns under the false pretenses of a job offer, etc., are so terrible I don't doubt at all that the people involved will do anything in their power to hide what they truly allowed to happen. After reading the first hand account of the women I cannot help but wonder how a society was able to become so patriarchal to the point of objectifying one gender so much that they were shipped off with the armies as pure tension releasers. Surely there is a better way to aid and support your armies than shipping off a larger percentage of your civilian population or captives to deal with the mental and physical tortures of war and sex slavery.
