Genetic Enhancements
I have mixed opinions
on genetic enhancement. I recognize my inconsistency because it is all
relatively the same process of gene interference or interactions. I agree with the
concept of IVF. While I would support adoption over IVF for parents who want
children and cannot have them. I can
also accept the reasoning behind wanting genetically similar children. I think
that IVF supports life, and in some ways the sanctity of life, maybe in terms
acceptable by Buddhist karma. I also think that genetic enhancement to avoid
genetic illness is morally permissible, because that is also improving the
quality of life. When genetic enhancement includes picking and choosing traits
or cosmetic appearances through gene manipulation, then I believe you cross the
line of moral impermissibility. That is too superficial of a reason to me to
begin playing with genetics. I also think the line is crossed when dealing with
gender selection of children. That can offset the very nature of a society, and
be biologically detrimental. Transgenesis while in the de Fonseca article may
be a part of natural evolution seems dangerous as well when humans play with
it. However, that may just be my ignorance.
